First, Antwerp-born Stéphanie Caulier, the founder and creative director, meets the man who will become the love of her life, and follows him halfway around the world to Australia. Happily settled in Perth but restless for a new venture. On a visit to New York in 2007, Caulier came across a knitting cafe. This chance encounter brings back childhood memories of her love of knitting, a favorite family pastime of her childhood. Back in Australia, the idea of her own knitwear label took shape in her head. With no formal training, but an avid knitter from an early age, Stéphanie Caulier takes on the challenge of designing a limited series of one-of-a-kind hand-knitted 100% wool garments and accessories. Caulier's first range of chunky knits stands out from the prevailing trends with its innovative use of the reverse stitch - a technique that has now, over a decade later, become Mr Mittens' trademark. Every step along the way is shaped by Caulier's own experiences. After presenting her first chunky knitwear to a select few premium boutiques in Belgium and quickly getting the first orders - a process she oversees from development to production herself - she realizes that her fledgling label is still looking for a name is. Based on an old, popular children's fairy tale and its mischievous protagonist, a cat named Mr. Mittens, she names her project Mr. Mittens. When Caulier launches her very first production, she decides to abandon mass production and instead rely on the talent and expertise of small teams of knitters in local ateliers, where each piece is handknit using time-tested knitting techniques. At the heart of it all is a belief in sustainability and the immeasurable value of community. Each garment bears the words "Heartworking knitwear", a testament to the women in the ateliers working in tandem to bring to life Caulier's vision of knitwear: perpetually modern, deceptively simple, timelessly elegant and above all of the highest quality. In just a few seasons, Stéphanie Caulier watches Mr. Mittens grow from a passionate project into an internationally acclaimed knitwear label, whose first clients include Chiara Ferragni and Leandra Medine. Praised for his timeless aesthetic and commitment to sustainable entrepreneurship, Mr Mittens stands for high-quality, sustainable knitwear made from 100% wool or 100% Pima cotton. In 2016, after the birth of her first daughter, Caulier decides to return to her hometown of Antwerp, where she continues to work on Mr Mittens, supported by a small team of enthusiastic followers.
